Mary Poppins taught us a few things — including the sheer, unadulterated joy of flying a kite.

The people of Streatham clearly recognise this — because in May, Streatham Common Kite Day returns for its 23rd innings. Here, you can watch all manner of kites flown by enthusiasts from across the world — from tiny crafts, to a life-sized blue whale kite measuring 30 metres in length.

Some teams fly dancing kites synchronised with music, and we're promised an appearance by the Flying Fish — a husband and wife double act who were previously UK National Champions.

If the displays inspire you, there's also a chance to buy kites and get tips from experts. Alternatively, bring your own kite, and join in the fun up in the sky.

Elsewhere on the Common, food and drink stalls, an ice cream van, a bouncy castle, face painting and stalls run by local community groups will keep kite fans of all ages happy.
